Small Obedience in Everyday Life

I don't know about you, but this year I am desiring to be practical with my faith. I want to show up in small ways everyday that can lead to major impact. I may not have the large chunks of time that I had before I became a mom, but I have several ten minute pockets where I can choose to be obedient. The years I have made New Year's resolutions of spending an hour in the word and making sure I pray at this certain time everyday, when I haven't been doing it at all was rarely successful for me.

I'll be honest finding a quiet time rhythm since having my daughter has been a struggle, but here is how I am choosing to be obedient even in the mess. Because I truly believe that being obedient and saying yes in the small stuff grows our faith in beautiful ways.

So here are some New Years Ambitions that I am doing this year to be obedient to where I feel God is calling. Feel free to try them out for yourself, adapt them to fit your season or use it as a jumping off point to create your own.

  1. I downloaded the Holy Bible app from youversion and I make it a point to read the verse of the day when I first get up and feed my daughter. It is a sweet time to read the verse outloud, get me focused on Jesus first thing and speak God's word over her. (side note, I think that there is something really cool about reading scripture out loud, I always get a different perspective when I do)

  2. Having Bibles where I actually am! This may sound silly, but this small change of moving my Bible to where I actually spend time during the day helps me be more likely to grab it and read it. So currently there is one in my nightstand and one in my downstairs diaper caddy. In this season, reading my Bible hasn't looked like highlighters, journals and deep theological studies. It has looked like choosing to read a Psalm or even half a Psalm when I have a few minutes rather than scrolling on my phone.

  3. Taking a Sabbath. This one we just started, but I am loving it. I have felt convicted for a few years to make one day a week a day of rest. I have made small steps to being obedient in this (small yeses) but this year I wanted to be intentional about it. For our family this has looked like paper plates and crockpot meals, preparing on Saturday to be restful Sunday, so church clothes laid out, meals prepped and planned, and everything we need for church by the door to eliminate the last minute scramble of finding items as we leave. I also started putting my phone into Do Not Disturb on Sundays to allow me to take a break from the noise and being more present. Maybe I will do a longer post on what Sundays look like for us soon.

  4. Being more intentional about praying throughout my day has been another big one. I use to think I could only pray if I set time aside to pray, which I love doing too, but fun fact you can pray WHENEVER! Even if you are doing something else like going for a walk, driving, chores around your house, changing a diaper etc. Being more intentional about my prayer life truly feels like a gift, because when I am staying connected through conversation with the Father, I have more peace, comfort, encouragement and clarity for my day.

These are just a few ways I am trying to grow in my obedience to how God is calling me to live. I feel like every season changes what it looks like, but the core values and priorities stay the same. You don't have to wait until nap time to open your Bible you can bring them in and make them apart of it. The season of longer, perhaps actually quiet quiet time will return, but it is important for us to remember that God will always meet you where you are at. So make it a priority to meet up with Him too.

Let me know in the comments how God is calling you to be obedient in this season.

Hi Friend! Let's Have Coffee!

I love meeting with friends for a cup of coffee and a catch up session. However, with moving all the time for my husband's job, they have become more virtual. So grab a coffee, curl up in your favorite spot and let's have a coffee chat.
